Rest or run!?

Featured

Just like people, dogs need a healthy balance of exercise, mental stimulation, and rest to feel their best.

While daily walks and playtime are incredibly important, quality sleep and downtime are often overlooked parts of pet care.

Physical exercise helps keep dogs fit and healthy, but mental enrichment is just as important. Activities like sniff walks, puzzle toys, training sessions, food enrichment, and learning new commands help keep your dog’s brain active and engaged.

Mental stimulation can reduce boredom, anxiety, and unwanted behaviours while helping dogs feel more settled and fulfilled.

Most adult dogs need around 12–14 hours of sleep each day, with puppies and older dogs needing even more.

Rest is when your dog’s body repairs muscles, supports immune function, and processes the stimulation and excitement of the day. Without enough downtime, dogs can become overtired, stressed, irritable, and even more reactive.

Just like us, dogs need time to switch off after busy days. A

calm home environment, consistent routines, and a comfortable sleeping space all help dogs properly recharge and recover.

As pet owners, it’s important to remember that rest is not laziness — it’s an essential part of overall wellbeing.

A balanced routine of exercise, mental enrichment, and quality rest helps dogs stay happier, healthier, and more emotionally balanced.

If you notice sudden changes in your dog’s sleep habits, energy levels, or behaviour, it’s always worth checking in with your veterinary team.
